“Meet and greet” is standard practice across the school.

Use the active listening & learning tool S.L.A.N.T (Sit up/Listen/Ask Questions/Nod (if you agree)/Track the speaker) to re-focus and to aid transitions during the lesson.

Lessons begin with a hook and a purposeful and clear starter to engage learners. All students are in a seating plan.

Achievement of a challenging measurable learning intention can be demonstrated through identified success criteria rather than simply by completion of task(s). We all use I am learning to… and we refer to the LI & SC throughout the lesson to ensure students can talk about the learning. Support staff and Learning Support Assistants are given the necessary information and direction.

Differentiation techniques in teaching are employed in all lessons.
Differentiation techniques by task, resource, support and assessment are employed throughout all lessons.  Differentiation solely by outcome is an insufficient process.

Specific and descriptive feedback is given to students regarding the quality of their learning and behaviour.

Make A Difference (MAD) time is planned into lessons where appropriate so that students can act upon feedback given.  Students know their levels and what they need to do to improve.

Teachers establish and manage non-negotiable boundaries through their communication of high expectations.

Teachers build and model respectful relationships with all students that promote an enjoyment and success in learning.

There is a structured end to all lessons with a final plenary and formal dismissal.

All students can expect lessons that incorporate…

HCC's High 5 Teaching & Learning Priorities

›PROGRESS
Especially with our white British students who in too many cases don't make expected progress.

›INDEPENDENCE
We want our learners to be able to analyse and evaluate, think deeply about what they are learning and why they are learning it.

›PERSISTENCE
Learners that solve problems for themselves and don't rely upon the teacher for all the answers. Learners that take responsibility for their learning and want to challenge themselves.

›PRIDE
Students that take pride in all of their learning and this is shown by high standards of presentation, homework and coursework. Deadlines are always met!

›RESPONSE
Students follow up on our feedback and make improvements to their work.
