Encourage, embed and reward students for displaying the positive behaviours of our Hyde 5:

1.Mutual respect for all

2.Be positive and always try your best

3.Allow others to learn

4.Bring all I need to learn

5.Take responsibility for actions

Always make your requirements absolutely clear to all the students in the class. Ensure that you always give very clear and specific directions for every activity or behaviour you require, e.g. “I would like you all to sit down on your own chairs”, rather than, “I want you to sit down”.

Always look for the behaviours you want, rather than the behaviours you don’t want. After giving your very clear and specific directions, immediately look for the students who are following those directions and reinforce that behaviour with approval and praise by repeating the direction, naming the individual or group and using positive feedback. This format should apply to every direction given, and the feedback should be to at least two individuals or groups.

Redirection of non-compliance, if some or all of the class do not follow your directions, then repeat the direction and look for any student who appears to be starting to follow your direction and acknowledge it.

Repeat redirection of non-compliance, if there are still students who are not following your directions then repeat the direction to those individuals in a quiet and confident manner, using names, e.g. “Alice I need you to …. “. “John I require you to….”, “ Phillip the direction is …….” and repeat direction.

Continuous feedback to conforming students. You must continue to feedback and praise to those students who are complying with your directions, particularly to those students who didn’t comply the first time but are now (use 'mystickers' to reward and record on go4schools).

Warn students of the consequences and if there are still students who are not conforming then very quietly, so only they can hear. Remind them of the consequences if they continue to ignore the direction, and what the sanction will be.  Give them the choice and then the space and time to choose, by withdrawing from the close proximity and allow the student the chance to conform, approximately 5 seconds.

Catch the student conforming.  The skill is now to catch that student showing any hint of compliance and reinforce that behaviour with specific, descriptive approval.

Delivering the corrective feedback. If the student chooses not to conform then, and only then, do you deliver the corrective feedback. However, it is vital that this is done quietly and privately in a non-judgemental way. At this time it is important to remember to feedback to other students who are conforming.

You may need post corrective feedback action. At this juncture it is essential that you concentrate all your effort on catching this particular student conforming in anyway and give feedback as described above.

If the student continues not to conform or follow your directions, then repeat the process of feedback again. Remember, every student who has been given corrective feedback must be given approval through recognition of appropriate behaviour (feedback) at the first conceivable opportunity, preferably within a matter of minutes. Find something to feedback

about.
